Pilau Rice

  • 1 onion small, sliced
  • 200 ml rice long grain
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cardamon pod
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cloves
  • 2.5 cm cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 400 ml chicken stock
  • 1 tbsp groundnut oil


  1. Dry toast the cumin seeds, cloves and cinnamon stick for a minute until fragrant and then grind into a powder using a spice grinder.
  2. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onions on a low heat until soft. Add the ground spices and the turmeric and cook for a minute.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients, cover the pan with a lid and cook on a low heat for 12 minutes or until the rice is done.

Recipe Notes

You can also add some additional vegetables such as frozen peas.
